ADDITIONAL INFORMATION OF IMPORTANCE

Important Information for Academically Suspended Students

Office for Student Success logo.jpgWe understand that a student can get in over his or her head in college, and that an academic suspension may feel like a dead end.  However, every student who has been placed on academic suspension has the opportunity to apply for reinstatement to The University.

With a commitment on your part to doing all you can, we can help you turn the situation around and return to Good Academic Standing (a cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.0 or higher).

There are two options for applying for reinstatement:

1. Sit out the Summer Semester and apply for reinstatement for Fall 2009

After not taking classes during Summer Semester, apply for reinstatement by meeting with the reinstatement advisor in your major’s academic department to prepare an Academic Reinstatement Plan.  The Plan will cover both the academic and out-of-classroom issues that impacted your prior academic performance. (If you have not yet declared a major, you will meet with the Reinstatement Advisor in the Undergraduate Advising Center.).

The meeting serves an opportunity for you and the advisor to explore the reasons for poor performance in the past, and develop strategies to address the identified issues.  For example, an Academic Reinstatement Plan often includes referrals to math tutoring, STUDY JAM group tutoring sessions, the Financial Aid office, and study skills courses.

Your Academic Reinstatement Plan is then submitted for approval by the academic Dean of your college.  If you are denied reinstatement by the academic Dean, you may appeal the decision in writing to the University President within ten days of receiving the notice of denial.

2. Enroll in UM’s Summer Reinstatement Program

The University offers a Summer Semester Reinstatement Program that waives the standard one-semester waiting period before a student may apply for reinstatement.  You will be allowed to register for classes offered during the second session of Summer Semester (June 29-July 31)

To be accepted into the program, you must agree to work with your reinstatement advisor to prepare an Academic Reinstatement Plan and continue meeting with him/her on a regular basis throughout the summer. We will assist you in locating the support and services you need to help you get back on track.

To apply for the Summer Reinstatement Program, contact the appropriate advisor below.

GRIZ CARD

The Griz Card is the official University of Montana I.D. for students, faculty and staff. It provides easy access to The University of Montana resources such as the UMoney program, Campus Recreation, Mansfield Library, PTS (Presentation Technology Services), Athletic tickets, GrizPrint labs, Mountain Line bus service, Dining Service meal plans and residence hall doors.  The Griz Card packs a wealth of innovative technologies into one powerful and convenient card which includes UMoney, the declining balance account accepted at over 150 on-campus and off-campus locations.  The Griz Card is automatically validated the day after fees are paid or the first day of class, whichever occurs later.

To obtain a Griz Card, present a valid I.D. and $15 at the Griz Card Center located in the University Center atrium. It is $10 for a replacement card or $5 to trade in a damaged card for a new one.  If a Griz Card is stolen or misplaced, it must be reported immediately to prevent unauthorized use.  The student is responsible for any activity on the Griz Card until it is reported lost or stolen.  For more information, to deposit UMoney or to report a misplaced/stolen Griz Card call 243-MYID or visit www.grizcard.com.

PARKING DECALS

A parking decal may be purchased by selecting the Parking Link in the Student Services and Financial Aid section of CyberBear at http://www.umt.edu/CyberBear. Decals purchased online will be mailed to local mailing addresses only. You can verify your mailing address by going to the Personal Information section of CyberBear and selecting Update Address(es) and Phone(s).  Decals purchased online will be charged to your student account.

You may also purchase a parking decal directly at the Public Safety Office, Building 32, behind the Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

When picking up a parking decal, students must provide:

  • Vehicle year, make, style and color
  • Vehicle license number and state that issued it

If you purchase the decal online, print the temporary permit and display it on your dash while waiting for the decal to arrive in the mail.  The temporary permit is valid for two weeks.  If you do not receive your decal within two weeks, please call Public Safety at (406) 243-6132.

College of Technology students pick up parking decals from the College of Technology cashier and should not select a decal on CyberBear.  Permits are issued at the COT cashier at no additional cost.  COT permits are not valid on main campus.

CLASS ATTENDANCE AND DROPPING COURSES

Students who are registered for a course but do not attend the first two class meetings may be required by the instructor to drop the course.  This rule allows for early identification of class vacancies to permit other students to add into classes.  Students absent and not allowed to remain must drop the course by CyberBear or turn in a drop slip to the Registration Counter in Griz Central or the Registrar's Office at the College of Technology to avoid receiving a failing grade.  Students who know they will be absent should contact the instructor in advance.

Please note:   Neither the Registrar's Office nor the Instructor drop students; rather, the students must execute the drops themselves.

GRADES

Autumn 2008 grades may be available on CyberBear after January 2, 2009.

Spring 2009 grades may be available on CyberBear after May 25. The student's Identification Number and Personal Identification Number (PIN) are required.  The initial PIN is the student's birth date - (mm/dd/yy).  This is entered as a six-digit number.  For example, for a student born January 9, 1975, the PIN is 010975.  For extra security, students are required to change their PIN to another six-digit number when logging on to CyberBear .
